Local News Briefs - October 18, 2013 (Bar Harbor) – The electronic sign read “Acadia Open” in Bar Harbor yesterday – just one sign that the federal government shut down was over. Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce executive director Chris Fogg tells WNSX it’s good to have the area’s biggest tourist attraction back. (Lamoine) – Only a handful of folks last night turned out in Lamoine to hear about the pros and cons about withdrawing from Regional School Unit 24. Jon VanAmringe (van-AM-ring) who helped put together a cost analysis on withdrawal said the report shows little impact no matter whether Lamoine stays or goes. RSU 24 Superintendent Suzanne Lukas said Lamoine student performance has improved since the school district was formed. Lamoine, Hancock and Ellsworth vote on November 5th. (Hiram) A one car crash in Oxford County has left one teenager dead and two others injured. Maine State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland tells WNSX, dead is 16 year old Alexia Valente of Hiram. Police report she was driving a 1998 Nissan Sentra when she was going too fast on the River Road in Hiram and lost control of the vehicle on a curve and struck a tree on the driver’s side. (Bucksport) Town officials will kick a Bucksport woman out of the home she once owned by Sunday. The Ellsworth American reports the town foreclosed on the property at 52 Central St. because no one paid the taxes. The occupant, Davida Willette, was given a 30 day notice to vacate the property. (Bar Harbor) A big donation for a restoration project in Bar Harbor comes from an anonymous source. The College of the Atlantic tells WNSX 100 thousand dollars will help fund the renovations of the Turrets building. The school says the project will cost 3 million dollars and the donation gives fund raising efforts a giant leap. The school has worked on the old granite building since April and the project is set to end next month. (Ellsworth) This weekend you can gear up and ride while helping expand a local trail. Friend and Friend Communications Director Andy Gallant tells WNSX they’re sponsoring the Sunrise Trail Charity Ride and BBQ this weekend. (Prospect) What’s Plaguing You? That’s what Fright at the Fort’s asking in their fifteenth year of scaring Mainers as they traverse through the dark and creepy halls of Fort Knox in Prospect. Executive Director of Friends of Fort Knox Leon Seymour says they usually have anywhere 8 to 10 thousand visitors who come through and dare to be scared. (Sanford) A Sanford teen is wanted by State Police for his alleged involvement in a burglary in New Hampshire. Maine State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland tells WNSX 18 year old Michael Clapp is charged with burglary and receiving stolen property in relation to recent burglaries in the Hollis and Alton, NH areas.
