Local News Briefs 9-6-13 (Brewer) – Police in Orono and Brewer have arrested a 31-year old woman they say attempted to hold up convenience stores. Cara Hussey allegedly entered the North Main Street Circle K store on Tuesday morning, handed the clerk a note, but fled when the clerk refused to hand over cash. Orono Police arrested Hussey after she allegedly tried to steal money from a safe at a Big Apple store (Bar Harbor) – Folks in Bar Harbor will see a survey about deer in the mail this week. A committee studying the deer population and the negative impacts from having too many of them is trying to gauge public opinion on whether hunting should be allowed on Mt. Desert Island. (Brewer) – Police are looking for a 34-year old former Brewer man in connection with the death of a prison inmate 4-years ago. A judge ordered John Thibeault held without bail, after he’s found. Thibeault was supposed to appear in court yesterday – he didn’t but his lawyer did. (Stonington) A Japanese film crew made a stop in Stonington last week. The Island Advantages reports the crew was filming footage for a Japanese television show called Luxury Cruises. The show features footage of cruises from all over the world. (Canton) State Police say a couple from Dixfield were killed Thursday afternoon when their car veered into the path of a dump truck in the town center of Canton. Spokesman Steve McCausland tells WNSX 73 year old Howard Child and and his 75 year old wife, Carrie Child, were killed instantly. (Veazie) A Hermon woman led officers on a high speed pursuit Wednesday and a neighbor helped police identify the suspect and arrest her Thursday. The Bangor Daily News reports 30 year old Katie Spencer is charged with driving to endanger, resisting arrest, operating after suspension of license, and a laundry list of other charges. Spencer sped off when a Veazie police officer attempted to stop her unregistered car (Bucksport) A young man in Bucksport is trying to become an Eagle Scout and help his town out in the process. Bucksport High School freshman Dylan Bunker tells WNSX, he’d like to manage a project to install signs at a nature trail. (Bar Harbor) – Political correctness has hit Bar Harbor. Lights will not go on a tree in Agamont Park this fall. The Mt. Desert Islander reports town councilors ended their lease with Wreaths Across America, in part to avoid the church and state separation debate. (Ellsworth) A Florida man will spend a year behind bars after pleading guilty for his involvement in an oxycodone transaction with Maine Drug Enforcement Agents in April. The Bangor Daily News reports 27 year old Jon Paul Haddad of Hollywood, FL was sentenced to 3 years with all but one year suspended and to forfeit over 1700 dollars in cash. (Penobscot) Folks in Penobscot will be able to email photos, download music, and surf the internet faster with broadband service there. Fairpoint Communications reports to WNSX they’ve been expanding coverage since 2008 and investing more than 200 million dollars in communications infrastructure. Spokesman Jeff Nevins says over 300 businesses and homes will now have access to high speed internet.
