Lokis Hip Hop Tuppenceworth Episode 3,006 Topic: Kendrick Lamar I think Kendrick Lamar has a great vibe that helps to make commercial hip hop a bit more thoughtful and optimistic. I also think Kendrick is a very good song writer and understands what kind of production he suits. With that said, many of his lyrics seem to be free written and upon closer scrutiny appear to have been hastily fashioned and, primarily, written to serve the beat and not the rap. I think people hate Drake so much they just want Kendrick to win at all costs but of all the new school in US mainstream rap, Kendrick Lamar is definitely the weakest bar for bar lyricist. His free association undermines his ear for melody and structure. What I enjoy most about Lamar is that you can almost see him smiling in the booth as he records his lyrics. Everything about his vibe is natural and on point. But, perhaps, he is getting a bit of a free pass where coherent lyricism is concerned and of all the people he name checked on his Control Verse, ironically, he has demonstrated the least battle ready bars of all. As for Big Sean....I still dont get it.
