Long live Southern Rock and this is one of my favorite bands in that category. That Smell, one of my all time favorites songs, is written about the increasing reckless indulgences of the band members, leading up to the evening of guitarist Gary Rossington surviving the crash of his new car into an oak tree along Mandarin Road in Jacksonville, FL. Released in 1977, Street Survivors is their fifth studio album. Its also the last album by Lynyrd Skynyrd to feature the original frontman Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines. Three days after the release of this album and five shows into their most successful headlining tour to date, Ronnie and Steve were killed in a plane crash that left the rest of the band and crew seriously injured as well.
