Look Far Deeper We all love to see the stars in the night sky. Beautiful and gleaming like sparkling white gems in the black abyss. But have you ever wondered why they twinkle sometimes and seem to flash, like somehow they are almost aware and their force and vigour are so clear? Look far deeper than their beauty, and you might just see, so much more. Jay was sitting by his window one night in the darkness of his bedroom. The sky was cloudless and he could see the stars clearly. Their light shone and lit his room with a gentle glow that warmed his heart as he stared in awe and wonder. He loved space and all of the planets. It had been his biggest passion since he was three. Now he had just turned nine years old and was starting to read big books all about the universe. He heard his mum tiptoeing carefully up the stairs. He knew she was going to check on him before she went to bed. As she peeped her head through the door she softly breathed some thing. ‘Jay are you not asleep?’ ‘Not yet.’ He replied. ‘I can’t stop looking at the stars Muma.’ ‘Aw I know, they are so beautiful, and what a clear night too.’ ‘Stars are special, and I know how special they are to you, and you are special to me, come hear.’ She grabbed and hugged Jay, tucked him in bed, then kissed and stroked his head tenderly and said, ‘Night night Jay.’ He was soon fast asleep and dreaming of stars and space. The next day Jay woke with a purpose that entered his thoughts. He sat up in bed and pondered for a moment. ‘I want to go see Julz today.’ He announced to himself as he sprung positively out of bed and skipped happily downstairs. Julz was Jay’s friend. But she wasn’t an ordinary friend you might normally have. She was a fairy. Jay had a special power to see far deeper in to life and see great things that most people overlook and usually miss completely. Julz was a loyal friend to him, she was always sweet, played exciting and adventurous games with him, answered questions and made him laugh and chuckle. She was just a little shorter than Jay and she wore a lilac and orange coloured all in one fairy suit. Her wings were like lace so fine you could often barley see them tucked behind her. She had a tomboyish nature and loved adventures. Her personality was rather like a bottle of fizzy pop drink waiting to explode with zesty bubbles of energy. She lived in a special tree house that she had made, right at the bottom of Jay’s garden, on the edge of a large field. Jay had his breakfast and got changed in to his day wear which were typical adventurous boys clothes, ripped jeans at the knees and a bright yellow sweat shirt. ‘I’m going out to play now.’ He said. ‘Ok.’ Have lots of fun, but be careful.’ ‘I will.’ And with that, he was out of the door. He hurried down the garden, right to the bottom, to where the big tree stood at the edge of the field. He stopped and looked up. There was a little wood and rope ladder leading up to a small, round wooden door. He carefully climbed up and when he reached the top he gave a knock on the yellow door. There was some rustling sounds and some giggles, then the door opened and Julz’s face appeared through it. ‘Hell-ooo, Jay Jay.’ As the sun shone on her, he noticed her big hazel coloured eyes and short auburn hair and her wings then rose up behind her, which glistened and glittered like diamonds in the sunlight. ‘How’s you doing today my friend?’ ‘Im very well thankyou Julz.’ Jay was a very polite boy. ‘Come in, come in.’ So he crouched down and hopped inside the tree house. He pulled up a wooden chair, and sat down. ‘Cup of fruit juice for Jay?’ ‘Yes please’ He nodded. ‘I collected it today, nectar, orange blossom and strawberry.’ ‘Yum.’ ‘What shall’z we do today?’ She asked Jay as he sipped his drink. ‘Aw, lets go and find acorns, and play hide and seek, or climb trees and make dens?’ As she chirped and jumped around in an exited fizz, she kind of reminded Jay of indigestion tablets he had seen his mum use, that when put in to water go in to a fizzy frenzy. This was Julz’s personality that made her so delightful. ‘Yeah, ok, yay.’ He chuckled.‘Julz?’ ‘ What Jay, yes?’ ‘Did you see how lovely and bright the stars were last night?’ ‘Yep, I sure did, ‘twas a very clear night indeed. ‘Beautiful.’ ‘You like the stars don’t you?’ ‘You talk about them lots.’ Jay looked at Julz. ‘Yes, I love them. They fascinate me very much, I feel I am almost connected to them some how.’ ‘That’s because you are connected to them.’ ‘Oh.’ ‘Well let’s go see them.’ ‘Go see them?’ ‘What do you mean?’ ‘We could go see them and then you can meet them properly.’ ‘Meet them properly?’ He was a little lost at this point and very puzzled. ‘I can take you there to see them if you’d like?’ ‘Take me there? In space? How? But I’m a human boy, I can’t go to space.’ ‘Yeah sure you can.’ ‘But will I need a spacesuit?’ ‘No no I will sprinkle and shake you with my fairy dust and you will be safe.’ ‘Oh gosh, wow, really?’ ‘Yeah sure thing.’ ‘But, before we go, I will tell you a little about them so you know. Well, stars are just like us. ‘Like us?’ ‘Yes, they are all different, they have personalities and a soul, and they even contain the same elements that we are made from, carbon and iron and even ‘amino-acids’, which are the chemicals responsible for creating life here on earth. Amino acids came to earth in a meteorite rock that hit the surface and life started to grow, very slowly of course, but that meteorite was the remains of a star that had died and exploded, part of it then fell here and we grew from it. We are part of them.’ ‘Oh gosh.’ He gasped with enlightenment. ‘They live and produce energy like us, they are born in to existence and they die too. They have a life cycle, just like ours but it’s just on a much bigger cosmic scale of billions of years, and every thing here and in space is recycled to eventually make something else. ‘How do you know all of this Julz?’ ‘Because I’ve talked to them, yes I go see them lots and they are my friends.’ ‘You can talk to them? Wow.’ ‘Yes you can, I do.’ ‘I wished you’d have told me sooner.’ ‘Well, shall we go then?’ ‘Yes please, Julz, will it be safe though?’ He said unsurely. ‘Yeah, you’ll be safe with me.’ She reassured him confidently. Julz looked at Jay and smiled warmly, quivered her wings and lots of tiny sparkling glittery specks fell from them on to him. ‘Come on.’ She giggled and held out her hand. Jay took it in his and they rushed out of the tree house, and trotted one behind the other down the ladder still holding hands. Then they started running swiftly over the large field until eventually Julz’s wings lifted up and they were flying in the next moment. Up and up they went, Jay was thrilled with excitement as they soared up in to the sky. After a while it started to get dusky as they got higher and higher. Then as they got to the very edge of the earth it went completely black and they had entered the abyss. As they smoothly drifted through space, Jay felt exhilaration as he looked around. ‘Wow, I’m actually in Space, he whispered’. ‘Yeah, no probs at all my friend.’ Julz was so used to visiting space. ‘Now, which way is it? Um, oh yeah, this way, lets go.’ Julz pulled Jay along with her, holding his hand and they easily moved through the blackness with the power of Julz’s wings and fairy dust. They passed clouds of dust and small rocks until then they came to the first star. Jay could see light coming up in front of him, as they got closer. ‘There he is.’ Julz said with a grin. When they reached the star they stopped in front of it and watched. ‘Hello there.’ Julz said to it. Jay looked. ‘It just looks like a big ball of burning stuff, giving off lots of light and heat.’ ‘No, no, wait a min, keep looking. Feel him.’ Said Julz patiently. As he stared for a while, the star started to change into a brilliant blue colour and he could indeed see deep into it. His name was Jonoe. He was blue in colour because he was mainly made up of a ‘copper’ element, although he was made of other elements too, this was his strongest and shaped his personality. ‘Jonoe, how are you? I want you to meet someone, this is my friend, Jay.’ ‘I’MM OK, THANKYOUUU.’ Came a huge low groan from him. ‘HELLO JAY.’ Then, silence. ‘He never really does say a lot, he gets a bit crotchety sometimes too, but he’s a real nice star all in all.’ ‘Look, there is his neighbour, Huggle. Lets go see her, come on.’ ‘Ok, bye bye Jonoe.’ Said Jay affectionately to the star as they zoomed off. ‘BYE BYE.’ Came another huge low boom. As they got to the next star Jay could see her soul immediately this time. She shone an intense scarlet red as her whole being showed. This was because her main element was ‘Lithium’. Her name was Huggle. ‘Hello Julz, oh who’s this then? Hello.’ Said Huggle star. ‘Hi.’ Jay piped up before Julz could speak. ‘My name is Jay, I love your colour, it is my favourite, you are pretty.’ ‘Aw, thank you Jay, what a lovely boy you are, so special.’ Jay smiled. ‘How are you Huggle?’ Julz questioned. ‘Oh yes, very-very good, thank you, so nice to see you Julz and your lovely friend Jay.’ ‘You too, what’s been happening then?’ She questioned the star further. ‘Oh well, lots of commits and asteroids, dust and rocks, supernova’s, and not to mention some black holes here and there which we have to look out for, and oh, Beetle Juice star is still in his ‘Red Giant ‘ stage, but we are very happy and I’m very happy to live next to my two neighbours, and I love your visits. ‘How are your neighbours?’ Julz wondered. ‘Oh they are doing well, yes Jonoe is always fairly quiet except when he looks over at Jo-podie , he seems to smile and shyly look happy when he sees her shining her bright beams, and Jo-podie is always full of cheerful glows.’ ‘Aw can we see her?’ Said Jay excitedly. ‘Yeah, oakey doke, lets go.’ They then said good-bye to Huggle and travelled to the third star friend. Her name was Jo-podie and her element was mainly of a hydrogen kind so she glowed bright yellow and occasionally sometimes white. ‘Gosh she has a beautiful glow.’ Said Jay in amazement as he saw the star coming up. ‘Heya Julzy, oh wow who do you have with you? Heya there.’ ‘Jo-podie, this is my friend, Jay.’ ‘Hi, you are beautiful.’ ‘Hi Jay, oh really? You are beautiful too.’ She said as she looked at him. He grinned and looked down coyly. ‘What’s been happening in your world my friends?’ Said the star. ‘Well.’ Julz began. ‘It’s lovely, summer has just started, the blossom is all on the trees, the birds are nesting and me and Julz play amongst the wildlife and the countryside.’ Jay finished. ‘The star had kind of gone in to a kind of far away dream for a moment as she listened. ‘Hhhmmm, how lovely.’ She said softly with a smile. ‘I can so imagine it, and feel it all through me.’ She then added. ‘Julz?’ Jay said slowly. ‘I do miss it’. ‘Miss what?’ ‘Where we live, our home. Would we be able to go home now?’ ‘Yeah, yeah, of course, of course, come on.’ ‘Bye bye you both and thanks for your presence and chats.’ ‘Bye Jo-podie.’ Julz and Jay echoed. ‘See you again soon.’ As they raced away from the star Jay peeked back round and looked at them all gleaming. He noticed Jo-podie look over at Jonoe and beam a smile and a wink at him back. He kept looking as they got smaller and smaller until he could not see them anymore. The turquoise blue haze of earth came rushing up before them as they approached it. Then it began to get light and Jay could feel air rushing past his face. It felt lovely to him and he was looking forward to being home. They came to above the big field and gently floated down inch by inch until they bounced as their feet landed on to the grassy ground below, then they were running again. They slowed down as they neared the tree house, then came to a halt at the bottom of Julz’s ladder. ‘Wow, wow, wow Julz, that was so, so awesome, thank you for taking me.’ ‘Oh you are most welcome my friend, any time you want to.’ ‘I’d better go indoors to see muma, she might have missed me.’ ‘Yes yes of course, I will see you tomorrow, to make dens.’ Julz stepped on her ladder and jollily fizzed up to her tree house. ‘See ya.’ Jay waved and ran up the garden smiling all of the way to his house. The door burst open. ‘Hello Muma.’ ‘Hello there, you had fun?’ ‘Oh amazing muma, brilliant, I love you.’ He grabbed and hugged her waist. ‘Oh Jay, I love you too, anyone would think you’d just been on a long adventure.’ She chuckled and hugged him back. Jay smiled and closed his eyes as him and muma clutched each other and embraced. Jay learnt so much about stars that day. He saw that they are so much more than what they appear, they are not only like us, but part of us too and we all are connected
