Look at her now!!! As we have had a few kind people enquire as to how Picture is going, we thought we would give you one last update. For those who don’t know Picture’s story, we’ll give you a quick recap; Picture was a survivor from the Mickleham-Kilmore fires who came to us on 11 February, 2014. She had sustained 50% burns to her body and was in a pretty bad way but surprised us all with her compliance to receiving treatment and her great appetite for food – especially apples!!! It soon became evident that she was in foal and unfortunately, she delivered the foal during the night on her own and her little filly only survived a day. She fought off bouts of diarrhea, continuing weight loss and the constant threat of infection. She got through all of this and never became difficult to treat – it was very rare that the vets had to sedate her to apply medication to her burns which must have been incredibly painful. Picture has a new home now and is thriving. She is in good health, has put on condition and her burns have almost healed – there are no wounds, only a few areas of fragile skin left which will eventually thicken up. She has a lot of scarring and will end up with areas of hair loss but we have been surprised at how much hair is re-growing. Picture really is a truly amazing little horse with a beautiful temperament and a will to live like no other – she is a one in a million and has touched so many people with her story. We have learnt so much from her, not just from a veterinary viewpoint as we had never treated a horse with such extensive burns that has survived, but also how a fighting spirit can seemingly prevail all.
