Looks like the old lady of The River has no use for dead men. I - TopicsExpress

Looks like the old lady of The River has no use for dead men. I heard that she pulls those who gaze into her eyes down into the water, allowing them to escape The City through death. She just stared at me. To her, Im just a passing curiosity. She always seemed pleased when Id tip her old coins from bygone eras. Shed grace me with a slight smile and a nod before Id leave. Id come for the waterproof biosteel safe that Id stored in her depths. Its funny, when I was younger, I used to bring disposable staff members to help me dredge up the safe. After a while, I had to bribe people from the streets to help me because I couldnt find staff members to volunteer. Guess thats what happens when enough people leave and never come back. Dredging up the safe with my shadows is easy for me, now. The trick is not to try to lift it. Just let the shadows swallow it, then regurgitate it somewhere convenient. In this case, the Caelum et Terra Hotel. My family used to own this place. After we were killed, Deonne Mason and his family took over. Tonight, Im taking it back. I have some dirt on him that hed sign over the moon to keep quiet if he could. I watched silently from the shadows as people heard the sounds from the monitors all over the hotel lobby. I watched their faces flush, then the horror of recognition. The best part soon followed. Deonne Mason and his father, Chairman Mason, entered the lobby. All eyes turned to them. They immediately yelled at the staff standing around dumbfounded and inept. I dont think it dawned on them that there was a serious situation happening. Dumbasses. I felt smug satisfaction as they finally felt the building pressure and judgment. They finally felt the weight of the eyes upon them. Red-faced and sweating, the twin pigs (thats what I always called them) found their eyes riveted to the lobby monitors. Shock. Recognition. Confusion. Comprehension. Disbelief. Rage. Shame. Rage again. All of these emotions played across their faces. Chairman Mason glared over to his son. Yes. Thats what I wanted to see. That look that let me know that Deonne wouldnt live through the night. The shame on Deonnes face turned to fear in an instant. Not because of his fathers outrage, but because he experienced a moment of sudden clarity. And awareness that his world was about to end. He realized that only two other people in the world knew this secret. One had been institutionalized long ago. The other was a dead man. Now, insult to injury. A messenger entered the room at just that moment. Perfect timing. Although a bit distracted by the scene on the monitors, the messenger handed a sealed envelope to Chairman Mason, then turned and handed one to Deonne. Both of their faces drained of color. In the Chairmans envelope was a contract to sign the rights of the hotel back to my family. In it was a note that read, Youll need this, and a card with enough creds to buy a person a new life, though modest. In Deonnes envelope was just a note that confirmed his worst fears. It read: You shouldve stayed away from your own sister. Now, youre a dead man, too. Flawless... Behind me, I heard His voice. Deep. Emotionless. The workers in the audio/visual room are dead, Brother. All security video has been locked. Only We have access. All the messengers have confirmed delivery of their packages to the press. Then I heard Her voice, dripping with sickly sweet innocence and insanity. Can I kill him, now? Shes so simple. Not yet. The Chairman has to sign the contract, first. Then you can do as you please. Make sure you bring back the creds from the Chairmans envelope, ok? We dont waist money. Deonne really liked little girls. Lets see what he thinks of Little Killer. ~Ososi~ Business Negotiations 101
