Loose Leash Walking - Using a Long Training Line *Caution* - long training lines arent for every dog (like a rambunctious, squirrel loving, 2 year old, 80 pound lab), nor should they be used near traffic nor close to other dogs or humans. But for some dogs, a long training line can be a helpful tool in teaching loose leash walking. Short leashes - Some dogs learn a chain - hit the end of the leash, give slack, keep walking. Hit the end of the leash, give slack, keep walking - Short leases get tight quicker. Tight leashes can invoke a dogs opposition reflex. And tight leashes can contribute to reactivity and frustration Long leashes - Give us plenty of time to get the dogs attention before the leash gets tight - Allows the dog to follow their noses (so the human doesnt have to compete with the envionment) - Allows the dog to walk at a pace that works better for him/her. Long Leash Precautions - Check it for fraying - Take care to not let it get tangled nor stepped on - Pick it up when the dog is near you - Be aware of triggers and try not to let the dog run to far away and check him/herself - Use a comfortable harness instead of a collar just in case the dog does pick up speed. - Make sure the leash is the correct size and strenth for the dog. - Start Loose Leash training indoors in a boring room, then in a boring outdoor area. Increase distractions in tiny increments. youtube/watch?v=uR4KX_An5jk
