Lots of experimenting and studying happening in the studio. Lots - TopicsExpress

Lots of experimenting and studying happening in the studio. Lots of ingot forging, prepping for patina and colour study. Lots of studying dodgy ingots, building a knowledge base. Lots of soldering practice. Lots of steel carving. And nothing worth showing, presently! So I have a question for you instead, friends. How many of you have been noticeably affected by a piece of art? Whether its a childs crayon drawing, a Renaissance masterpiece, a fine piece of Art Nouveau jewellery, or a imposing piece of Gothic architecture - have you ever felt moved and influenced by a specific piece of art enough that it informed or altered your world view/aesthetic vision? Ill start things off with the four photos Ive attached here. The first is The Taking of Christ by Caravaggio - I studied this painting waaaay back in high school, and the chiaroscuro technique is one that, once I understood it, established the foundation of how I saw the relationship between light and dark, positive and negative space. The next two photos are of jewelry pieces by John Paul Miller (squid brooch) and Rene Lalique (peacock hair pin). Up until the point I found these, I hadnt really thought of metal jewelry as sculptural, or art pieces. Millers command of organic forms augmented by enamel and granulation made me look closer at workmanship, and Laliques sweeping definition of form in Art Nouveau forced that looking to take a step back in order to see that form. The last photo is of a 2008 tsuba by Ford Hallam - its the very first piece by him that I came across, and the combination of sensitivity and technique is what made everything come together, and drive me down the path Im on now. As Im currently trying to find my own aesthetic view, I look at and study a lot of art, but nothing feels as impactful as these. How about you? What moves, inspires and drives you?
