Lots of people who come to me for a rear facing car seat for their one year-old, ask for a combination seat, ie. one that can also face forward, just in case he doesnt like rear facing when hes older. A lot of the seats that I sell do have the option to face forward, but I sell them first and foremost as rear facing car seats, and tend to ignore the fact that they can also face forward. Forward facing in a harness subjects the childs neck to very high loads in a crash. And even in older children whose necks are stronger than a babys, those loads are still unacceptably high. There are a lot of rear facing car seats that have a weight limit of 25kg. But (with the exception of the Britax Two Way Elite) ALL forward facing harnessed car seats have an 18kg Group 1 limit (even if the same seat rear faces up to 25kg). That is the weight of an average four and a half to five year-old, with lots of children reaching 18kg as young as three. Ideally all children should rear face until they are at least five. So buying a seat with a forward facing option just in case is pointless, because most children will reach the 18kg weight limit before they are old enough to face forward. It takes more than two years to put on the extra 7kg before they reach the 25kg Group 2 limit, which will be at six or seven years old, and then they are old enough to go straight into a booster seat. In my experience all children love rear facing. The little ones who have gone from their baby seat into an ERF dont know any different, and the older ones who are turned back once their parents find out about ERF, love it. Parents look at rear facing from their own point of view. They cant imagine facing the wrong way, and think it may be uncomfortable and boring. The children dont experience it that way at all. As these pictures show they are happy, comfortable and have a great view. :)
