Middle School, High School and College: Science Fair Projects bring acclaim to student by LRSEF | Jan 26, 2014 1 Aimee Turner, a 4 time LRSEF Finalist to the Intel ISEF and a freshman at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, has continued research at college. Aimee worked to further develop her mathematical formula that predicts human impact on biodiversity and it is over 80% accurate. In December, Aimee was selected to present her research at the 3rd Annual National Collegiate Research Conference (NCRC) at Harvard University January 23-25, 2014. NCRC enables students to present their research in a professional setting through poster and oral presentations. The exchange of ideas through a common interest in research is the foundation of a successful national research community. LRSEF is very proud of Aimee, she competed at LRSEF as a middle school student from Myzeek and a high school student from Ballard. Congratulations Aimee! Meet our new Fair Directors by LRSEF | Dec 12, 2013 Leave a comment [fred and ronda] Ronda Fields has spent 25 years serving the LRSEF, beginning as a teacher sponsor and working her way up to where she is now. She has sent a total of 23 students to the International Science & Engineering Fair. Ronda is enthusiastic and thrilled to be named the new co-director. She loves what the fair does for the students, igniting a spark or keeping their passions alive. Ronda joked that she hears her quieter students talk the most while they are working on fair projects. A huge advocator and fan of the fair, she sees the benefits of these projects far and wide. From the inception of a project, to the research, planning, presenting, and conclusions – Ronda knows that these aren’t just science projects. They are an aid for students to better learn, understand, and communicate. She can’t wait to see you at the fair this year! Fred Whittaker is originally from Waukegan, Illinois. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Louisville. Science has been a life-long passion of his, one he inherited from his parents who both taught him to hold the elegance and mysteries of the Universe in awe. He has taught science at St. Francis of Assisi School for the past 11 years and he has been a devotee of the independent research which underpins science fairs during his entire teaching career. He was also on the part-time educator team at the Kentucky Science Center for many years as an inspirer of informal STEM learning. Mr. Whittaker has two children, Christine and Michael who also love to wonder about the world. In his free time Fred enjoys photography, keeping up with the discoveries made by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Holocaust research and compassion initiatives, volunteering at Catholic Charities, and hiking. Tom, a retired professor of chemistry and former provost at U of L is widely known for his engaging science demonstrations and his innovative education programs utilizing the “Seven Habits of Highly Successful People” as a student leadership development strategy. Tom spearheaded bringing the Regional Science Fair to the U of L campus and was highly visible often out directing traffic on Floyd Street in the early morning hours on the day of the annual fair. Last spring, the Louisville Regional Science and Engineering Fair Board also recognized Dr. Crawford with our first ever, Leadership Award given by Dr. Tina Gibson at our 2013 Science Fair. Tina gave a heartfelt testimony of Tom’s impact on the quality and depth of the science fair over many years and he was given a beautiful glass sculpture. Among his many achievements was his hard work to help establish the Kentucky State Science and Engineering Fair 10 years ago and his constant efforts to celebrate all regional participants along with the help of his lovely wife Wanda.
