Love Mayor Price’s Purple Purse. Hate why she’s carrying it. Fort Worth Mayor and Erin Wilde will carry purple purses to raise awareness for domestic violence. Mayor Price will be carrying a purple purse for a week to support SafeHaven of Tarrant County’s participation in The Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Challenge. SafeHaven of Tarrant County is one of only 146 organizations across the nation selected to participate in the challenge, a five week campaign to ignite public awareness of domestic violence and financial abuse while raising funds for the organizations that support victims. The Purple Purse Challenge kicks off Tuesday, September 2 when SafeHaven CEO Mary Lee Hafley “passes the purse” to local morning DJ and domestic violence survivor Erin Wilde live on the air on 92.1 Hank FM at 9 a.m. Along with Erin and Mayor Price, a third purse will be passed to the students in the CTV staff at Creekview Middle School in Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD. Each of them will carry their purple purse for a week, posting pictures and inviting people to spot the purse and then tag themselves on Twitter of Facebook with the hashtag #spotthepurse. At the end of the week, they will pass the purse. Quick Facts • Domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime — thats more women than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined. • While physical abuse is the type of domestic violence most people hear about, financial abuse (using finances as a tool of power and control) happen just as frequently. • Research shows that the number one reason victims remain in relationships with their abusers is that they lack the financial knowledge and resources they need to break free. • The All State Foundation created the concept of the Purple Purse to raise awareness and change societal attitudes about domestic violence and financial abuse. About The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge The Allstate Foundation will be donating $500,000 to ignite public awareness and fundraising for charities benefiting domestic violence survivors. The charities that raise the most funds will be eligible for increased funding through the Challenge’s benchmarks.
