Lovely. Moving and incredibly well-acted. Cate Blanchett is not of this earth. She is a pulchritudinous vessel who receives her acting instincts from Some Other Place. But while she is obviously the planet around which the other stars revolve, what stars they are. Extraordinary, richly detailed performances from all, but special praise has to go to Sally Hawkins in particular. Saw her in HAPPY GO LUCKY, thought she was great, though the film underwhelmed. And Bobby Cannavale is superb. Woody Allen moves this episodic ensemble piece along like the seasoned master he is. At first I was wondering why one would want to update the narrative of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. Though a fascinating plot, its real magic belongs to the gorgeous, humane poetry of Tennessee Williams. But in the sure hands of Allen, the story is told anew. What I love about Allen is his disregard for topping himself. I dont doubt for a minute that anything hes working on he wants to be as good as it can be, but looking at his work over the last however many years, he is exploring what interests him. And we benefit. To paraphrase him, the art wants what it wants. 4 1/2 of a possible 5 Dougs. imdb/title/tt2334873/
