MAN, CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky over the livestock and over all of the wild animals, and over the creatures that move on the ground.” So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.[Genesis 1:26-27] …the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.[Gen.2:7] In this post I will discuss the creation of Man. Many of the things I say in this post also apply to women. However I will discuss the details of the creation of Women later. In the verses above, the word “image” is a huge concept for Man, because Man was created in the image of God. It is very significant that the Bible does not say, “Let me make man in my image.” It says, “in our image.” Who is “our”? “Our” is the Trinity of God. If you take God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit, we say they are one with one another. The Trinity is a mysterious spiritual concept, that for me, I accept on faith, I’ll leave it to the Theologians to discuss the details on the concept of the Trinity. Other religions refer to Christians as polytheistic, meaning that we worship more than one God. We do not! God is one, Christ is God with us in human form, and the Spirit is referred to as the power of God. I do not have a problem with that and I hope that you do not either. When the Bible says “in our image” think about relationships. What is it about the re3lationship between the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit with one another? It is a relationship of oneness. When you read the Bible, unity or oneness is very important to God(see John17). Therefore God’s image on man includes a relationship of oneness with God and other human beings. It is an essential and necessary characteristic that all human beings have: the need for God and the need for others. When you apply this to men today there are a lot of men who just want to be left alone. It is a 100% guarantee that that person will grow miserable and become depressed. God created us to have relationships, make sure you develop some real physical relationships, internet relationships do not count they need to be face to face accountable relationships. God choose to create man with personality, with a soul with abilities to reason and make moral judgments. God also gave man the ability to make decisions, free will. God gave that to man and no other animal. The word formed used generously in Genesis 1+2 with “God created…”) is an interesting Hebrew word: “bara.” The reason it is interesting is because the only time it is used is with God and it simply means “something out of nothing”. God created. He spoke into existence. It didn’t exist before. He spoke it, and now it exists. Do not take lightly that God created you different from all of His other Creations. He desires a relationship with you that is freely chosen by you. God wants companionship with you, not for His sake but for yours’. Read all of Genesis 1-3 and see how God related to Adam and Eve. All throughout the Bible you will see that God’s relationship with you is something very valuable and precious. He has done everything to make this possible, and yet, man continues to reject God.
