MAN MURDERED AT CLAYTON STATION CLAYTON railway station is emerging as a transport trouble spot in Melbournes southern suburbs, with a stabbing death yesterday preceded by another serious bashing and knife threat reported at the station last year. Police are appealing for any witnesses to yesterdays fatal stabbing, which occurred about 8am in the station car park. A man of Asian appearance and believed to be in his 20s was stabbed several times in the upper body. Paramedics were called to the scene but the man died. The killer, who fled and was still being hunted last night, was also believed to be Asian, police detective senior sergeant David Snare said. Clayton station is staffed from first train to last, and there was one Metro employee on duty at the time of the murder. The death comes a day after the Rail, Tram and Bus Union and the Police Association wrote to the government and the Opposition, demanding extra staff to protect rail commuters. Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula says crime on trains has dropped 15 per cent despite patronage increasing by more than 50 per cent over the past decade. The claim of falling crime on the rail system was disputed by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union this week. The Opposition has pledged to put protective service officers on every metropolitan railway station at night. A coalition government would also recruit an extra 1600 front-line police. The opposition transport spokesman, Terry Mulder, said safety on Cranbourne and Pakenham line trains, which pass through Clayton, was an ongoing problem. Documents that were released under freedom of information laws to Mr Mulder by the state governments safety regulator, Public Transport Safety Victoria, show that on August 18 last year, a passenger at Clayton station reported being assaulted and threatened with a knife. Police Association secretary Greg Davies said yesterdays murder backed up its call for more staff on the public transport system.
