MARCH 7, 2014 · 5:22 AM ↓ IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Son of God Last Friday night, Norma Jean and I saw the movie Son of God. Without critiquing the movie’s “mistakes”, overall we enjoyed the movie and found it inspirational. The thesis of the movie is captured in the title: SON OF GOD. It is in stark contrast to many other movies through the years that cast doubt on Jesus’ Deity. The 1973 Rock Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, written by Andrew Loyd Webber and Tim Rice, pictured Jesus as a mere man, questioning and doubting the whole idea of dying on the cross. Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, producers of Son of God are believers in the Deity of Jesus. While I may disagree with some of their theology, they seek to depict the Bible narrative in a way that honors and glorifies Jesus. Of course, ultimately I find the BOOK better than the movie! So, what does the Book say about the SON OF GOD? (1) The Bible affirms that Jesus was the Son of God. 46 times the New Testament writers speak of Jesus as the Son of God. When the angel appeared to Mary, he said, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God (Luke 1:35). John, the prophesied forerunner, testified, pointing to Jesus, saying, “this is the Son of God. (Jn 1:49). So also said Nathaniel, Peter and the other apostles. They saw the miracles. His defiance of gravity as he walked on the water. The healing of the lame. The blind. And the deaf. Martha, the sister of a dead brother, Lazarus, confessed her faith in Jesus’ Deity. When Jesus came to Bethany, Martha questioned him, “If you had been here my brother would not have died, but I will give you whatever you ask. That’s when Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” Martha’s response? “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” Jesus is the Son of God. The people knew it. (2) Jesus’ admitted that he was the Son of God. Most of the time, especially in public venues, Jesus did not directly admit He was God’s Son. However, the movie pictures this dramatic scene when Jesus is brought before the High Priest Caiaphas. All four gospel writers record varying aspects and details. False witnesses testified, but they could not get their stories straight! Finally, Caiphas pointedly asked Jesus, “Are you the Son of God?” Jesus’ two word answer was simple and direct: “I AM.” (Mk. 14:53-65) That answer sealed his sentence. “Blasphemy!” cried the court! Jesus is the Son of God. He admitted it. On the most famous Friday in all history, the Son of God was condemned to die. Unmercifully ridiculed. Brutally beaten. Nailed to a cross. And there He died on Calvary’s hill. (3) The Resurrection proves that Jesus was the Son of God. Unlike some movies, Son of God, does not end with Jesus in the tomb. Resurrection Sunday serves as the final proof that Jesus was indeed Deity–The Son of God. To the church at Rome, Paul penned, that Jesus “declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Rom. 1:4). Paul, however, had not always been a Believer. He was once a persecutor of Christ and Christians. But he saw Jesus on the Damascus road. He was converted and immediately began preaching Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God” (Acts 9:20). Jesus the Son of God. The Resurrection verifies it. And so on Sunday when we join with other Believers, we honor the founder of Christianity–Jesus Christ, The Son of God! The risen Redeemer! The Savior of our sins!
