MATCH REPORT: 6th September 2008 WINDSOR 3s 31 - OUTCASTS 24 OUR ANNUAL PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY (Photographs were taken) The pitch sparkled with that late summer glow so beloved of poets and songwriters as we arrived underneath the imposing home of our monarch with 17 good men and one Rhodesian, and to our first surprise... 70 minutes to go before kick off and the opposition were in full kit running through plays. Ignoring this insult to third team rugby we strode manfully through their clubhouse to the worlds smallest changing room which would only get 8 men in at a time and was so small that a one stage me and Ian Stewart (yes he is still alive) were caught putting the same pair of shorts on. After ten minutes of this we took over another empty phone box, sorry changing room opposite only to be thrown out like naughty schoolboys by the barmaid (build that aggression up early lads). Finally we got out on the pitch and led by new captain Aussie Dave Hay were awe inspired for the opening ten minutes and took a 7 to nil lead when the new captain finished of a great move with a try under the posts. Then we decided we could play like the barbarians on acid tabs and threw everything to anyone and that tackling was discretionary. Adam McKee had some great runs although I am sure I heard a posh voice from the castle say, Phillip will that Kiwi idiot ever pass the flipping ball? The worst try we conceded was when the scrumhalf picked up a short penalty and just jogged under the posts between Pete Madalena who was screaming leave him alone its not ten yards and Christian Pettit (who informed us before kick off that this was his first game since the Hove Under twelves). This meant at half time we were 24 to 7 down. The team talk at the break worked as we were a different team in the second half. This transformation was in no small part down to Holly as were far fitter than a much younger team. Big Jason Ellison smashed his way over for two great tries and Chris Jeffery opened his account with the finishing of a great team effort. Unfortunately with the scores tied we conceded the last try by not tackling on the only break-away Windsor had in the second half. The fact it was a knock on as Luke politely pointed out to the idiot (sorry, typo) ref did not help. Now a few mentions, Man of the match was so close that it should have been a six way tie but the final call was for Christian who despite not playing for a few years was rock solid in the scrum, good in the loose and great in the showers???. What did they used to do in the under twelves!!!!! Paul Moorhouse stood in at scrum-half and was superb. Chris Jeffery was the key link in all our good play. Tom Druce looked at times a class above. The backs as a whole were superb with Ky Wright our new welsh signing (cost us two jars of mint sauce but looks a good buy) showing blinding pace and tackling like a steam train. Luke put in his usual great performance and Alistair finally played like he does at touch. Jason Ellison and Dave Hay looked like the first team players they are and we are lucky to have them both. Ollie Asha also put in such a good game he starts against Worthing this week in front of a lot of very good players. Ian Stewart and I turned up. If you have not been mentioned it must have been because I did not notice you so try harder. Just kidding a good game all round. GLORIOUS LEADER GOES TO GET MORE CIDER
