Most of the rails are made of ASTM A6/A6M Specification for General Requirements for Rolled Structural Steel Bars, Plates, Shapes, and Sheet Piling. Based on the Fatigue Curve for this material, it will not fail when it is subjected to a peak stress of not more than 30 ksi for an infinite number of cycles. One cycle is equivalent to each time the railroad car wheel touches the rail. Most of the rails in MRT/LRT did not fail, therefore, the rail must have been designed for less than 30 ksi. And therefore the rail that failed must have been subjected to a peak stress of more than 30ksi, including the dynamic load factors and the stress intensifiers. This high stress could have been caused by the un-even modulus of elasticity of the ballast or the ground supporting the railroad ties. Food for thought: One of the purposes of Maintenance is to maintain the Structural Integrity of the design as a whole. And for this design it can be done with minimum new material expense by; 1. Maintain the Ballasts Compactness, 2. Monitor the deflection of the rail caused by the wheels, which could be converted to the actual stress seen by the rail, 3.
