MAYORS MESSAGE 27th May 2014 I would encourage community minded residents to consider standing as a Councillor in the October elections. Whilst, there is still some time before you have to officially nominate, the Local Government Association of Tasmania is running a series of workshops for those interested in becoming a Councillor. There are two workshops on the Coast and you can attend either or both – Monday 2 June, Bayviews Restaurant (Burnie) and / or Wednesday June 11, Devonport Council Chambers. All workshops will take place from 5.30pm until 7.00pm. To register phone (03) 62335966 or email [email protected] ***** It is always a challenge opening a new business in this world of online shopping. It is however important to keep retail therapy alive and relevant and the shop locally campaign has been well received by businesses. The townships of Latrobe and Port Sorell are fortunate to have a variety of specialty shops that need our support. Many of the businesses provide much needed employment opportunities for locals. A number of the new businesses have opened in both towns and along with the more established premises you will receive friendly service and engaging conversation. ***** The new Port Sorell Community and Performing Arts Centre is really starting to provide a presence situated opposite the Port Sorell Primary School. There is a small hardworking committee charged with the task of coordinating and providing guidelines for the eventual management of the centre. More information will be provided to potential user groups closer to the opening of the centre. *****
