MBA killed them. It hadnt been long for them together. It was like they were two sides of the same coin; so similar, yet so contrasting. All said, they brought out the best in each other. She held his hand, while her man proved to be one of the top two percent in the country, as he tread upon this journey, together. For the last few months, the future was all that they could talk about. For the last few months, late night phone calls meant her helping him to revise the toughest sections in the book. For the last few months, they met up only to go through the statistics of different universities. But it had all been worth it. Except he would be going away for two years. They promised they would make it work. Phone calls, secret room visits, telepathy: they would just do it all. He was going away to build a future for them, while she could continue to write, just the same. While she could have the small things appreciated, just the same. It wasnt something that happened suddenly. The realization coursed through her slowly. Today, one year later, she conceded that he indeed was different. Gone were their long quoting sessions on Neruda, gone were them just debating about the Marxists, gone were the days where they would argue against Sylvia Plath and then not remember why. Conversations had transformed. From the little nothings, it was always about the changing economy. Not that she wasnt proud anymore, she just didnt like the way he made everything equivalent to money. Stocks, real estate markets and pay packages were all that they talked about. But at the end of it all, though her heart felt imbalanced, it was happy for him. Just the same. She had always imagined a life for them. She had finally found a man, who could run his fingers through her hair and reference Jean-Michel Basquiat in their conversation. But now, sending him off to build a future for them, she saw their future collapse altogether. The realization that it was all going to be over soon, coursed through her body, sending ripples to her soul. Meanwhile, she held onto the phone, smiling, nodding and hoping against all odds, that somewhere, inside the B-school exterior, would be her man. The man she had once loved.
