MCL Medicoll MoU Signed Bhubaneswar : 4/March/2014 In a bid to overcome the issue of shortage of doctors in the State and cater to the health needs of the people, the State government today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mahanadi Coalfields Limited to establish another medical college and hospital in Odisha. According to official sources, the medical college, proposed to be set up in Talcher, will have 100 MBBS seats and the hospital will comprise 500 beds. Principal Secretary of Health & Family Welfare Department PK Mohapatra and CMD of the MCL A N Sahay signed the MoU for establishment of medical college and hospital at Talcher “When our Government assumed office in 2000, we had three medical colleges in the State. Now in 2014, we have about eight functional medical colleges and seven others are in various stage of establishment,” said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who was present on the occasion. Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal could not attend the function. Patnaik called upon other Public Sector Undertakings (PSU)s operating in the State to come forward to set up medical college and hospitals for which the State Government would provide all possible support. However, despite several round of discussions with the State Government, NALCO has not come up with concrete step for setting up of its proposed medical college and hospital at Damanjodi. The Chief Minister urged both the State Health and Family Welfare department and MCL authorities to step up activities for establishment of a medical college and hospital at Talcher so that it starts functioning by the start of 2016-17 academic session. Talking to media persons, State Health and Family Welfare Minister, Damodar Rout said that in 1960, there was only one medical college and hospital in the State. During the last 40 years, only two medical colleges were added. “Now there are 15 medical colleges and hospitals. Besides, there are also proposals to set up medical colleges and hospitals from private promoters”, he added. He stated that in order to ensure quality health services in the State, the government has planned implementation of projects at an estimated cost of Rs 3,000 crore out of which Rs 1,000 crore would be spent each year which is set to begin from the year 2014-15. “The State government has sanctioned establishment of four nursing colleges in the State. Besides, the State government has approved recruitment of 10,300 paramedics including radiographer, staff nurse, etc. soon. Appointment of 406 posts for dental surgeons has also got the government nod”, Rout said. He also stated that the State government has decided to hike monthly remuneration of Ayush doctors from Rs 12,000 to Rs 17,000 and stipend of house surgeons from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. This is set to benefit 1516 Ayush doctors and about 400 house surgeons. Regarding setting up a medical college and hospital at Talcher, CMD of MCL, AN Sahay said, “MCL would pump in around Rs 300 crore to Rs 500 crore for the project. The State government has agreed to provide 20 acres of land free of cost to MCL for the purpose. MCL would take all out measures for completion of the project by 2016 so that admission to MBBS students could start during academic session 2016-17. The admission of MBBS students will be as per provisions of Professional and Education Act, 2007.
