MDE REPORT LAUDS COUNTY PROGRESS Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt is pleased to announce the County received an outstanding evaluation from the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) for progress towards achieving 2012 and 2013 milestones geared towards restoring the Chesapeake Bay. To promote continual progress, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calls on states – and in turn, local jurisdictions – to identify milestones to be reached in two-year increments. In 2011, County officials, in conjunction with local municipalities, submitted a total of 10 programmatic milestones identifying local efforts to reduce pollution from septic systems, stormwater and wastewater sources. This evaluation demonstrates the County’s commitment to improve the water quality of local rivers and creeks, as well as the Chesapeake Bay. County Executive Pollitt said, “I’m proud to see that Wicomico’s can-do commitment to improved water quality is being noticed. Hopefully, our leadership will encourage others to tackle their own obligations in support of a clean and healthy environment. We can make this count!” The efforts to date would not be possible without the support of our community partners, as well as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Chesapeake Bay Trust, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
