MEDIA ADVISORY For Immediate Release Saturday June 22nd, 2013 @ 9:00 AM Walk-For-Justice: Canadians to walk for justice, highlighting the continuous atrocities against Tamils and calling for complete boycott of Sri Lanka. Toronto – According to UN Internal Review in 2012, about 75,000 ethnic Tamils (known as Eelam Tamils), including women and children, were slaughtered by ethnic Sinhalese controlled Sri Lankan armed forces between January and May of 2009. They were herded into a small beach area and bombed and shelled from land, sea and air in a genocidal onslaught. Another 300,000 Eelam Tamils were locked in concentration camps where they were tortured, abused and deprived of basic needs. Due to mounting international pressure, most were since released, but tens of thousands continue to be displaced and prevented from resettling in their original homes and lands. Disappearances continue to occur till to this date. Recently released UN documents indicate the death toll in Sri Lanka is the worst mass atrocity of the 21st century, surpassing the genocide of Srebrenica and Bosnia and present day Syria combined. Tamils will be campaigning against the oppression of ethnic Tamils and the occupation of their nation called Tamil Eelam in the island of Sri Lanka. This walk, starts at Queens Park on Saturday June 22nd at 2pm, is a reminder of the continued atrocities faced by Tamil people in their homeland. It also serves as a warning to the state of Sri Lanka that the world is watching.
