MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 22, 2014 MINISTER’S EXPLANATION FLIES IN THE FACE OF COMMON SENSE - CAPI CITIZENS’ ACTION FOR PRINCIPLES AND INTEGRITY (CAPI) asserts that the explanation given in Parliament yesterday by the Minister of National Security Peter Bunting, regarding the procurement of a private jet to deport controversial Trinidad and Tobago Muslim leader Abu Bakr, flies in the face of common sense and smacks of contempt for reasonable-thinking Jamaicans. Yesterday, Bunting explained that the government decided against detaining Abu Bakr for fear that he may radicalized other prisoners and that he regard the $4.3 million price tag as a home insurance policy. But CAPI’s co-convenor Dennis Meadows says the minister failed the credibility test and is yet to convince the Jamaican people of the national security imperative which caused him to expend US$36,000.00 to charter a private jet to shuttle Mr. Abu Bakr out of the country. “The minister advised that he was made aware of Abu Bakr’s pending arrival at the point of check-in at the port of departure in Trinidad. It begs the question, why didn’t the Minister deny Abu Abk’s visit before his arrival, similar to the actions taken against Gerald Perreira, a Guyanese Muslim leader who was barred from entering the island on his way to Jamaica to attend the 19th anniversary celebration of the Million-Man March.” The lobby group also argues that Mr. Bunting could have detained Mr. Abu Bakr in an isolated cell at the Horizon Remand Centre until he complied and this would have allay the minister’s perceived fear of Abu Bakr radicalizing other inmates. As a sovereign State, we should not be dictated to, or coerced by any person being deported, on the mode or class of transportation, and the minister’s frantic and cowardice action have cost the Jamaican taxpayers an unnecessary cost for which he must be held accountable, the group further states CAPI notes that the Minister Bunting also failed to include in his statement to Parliament, the pertinent information as to the owner/company of the private jet which was procured, and urges the minister to advise the public of the recipient of $4.3M of their tax dollars. -30-
