MEDIA RELEASE ON BEHALF OF BOLAND CRICKET BOARD,Tuesday, 03 December 2013 Boland Cricket Board was established in 1992, with their headquarters and stadium situated on the edge of the Winelands town Paarl adjacent to the N1 motorway. The grounds, which are approximately 14 hectares and which the Boland Cricket Board owns, is in the midst of what is a predominately previously disadvantage community. Boland Cricket comprises one of the largest provinces in South Africa, and has already taken steps to instigate a regional set-up (8 Regions) to derive maximum value from the current limited financial resources. This measure will also facilitate the monitoring and development of a quality player, coach, administrator, umpire and scorer pipeline more efficiently. The Province stretches from Vredendal in the northwest to Bredasdorp on the south coast and includes the communities of Vredenburg and Saldanha in West Boland, Worcester and Robertson in North Boland, Wellington, Paarl, Malmesbury, Brackenfell and the neighboring university town of Stellenbosch in Central Boland. The talent at all levels for both the immediate future and the longer term is very promising and with the proper financial and development support, club/regional cricket in the Boland will continue to excel and become the benchmark Province in South Africa. In 2000 Boland was crowned Champions of the Standard Bank limited over competition. We have produced representative players at all levels up to the National side. Umpires and coaches have also progressed to higher honours. Many of the players in the current Cape Cobras Franchise are Boland players. The stadium has hosted ODI matches as well as franchise and provincial games. Boland Cricket is a huge contributor to the transformation policy of Cricket South Africa. Critical Issues Whilst Boland has been successful at provincial level for many years there are still barriers at school and club/regional level to entering the mainstream of Cricket South Africa (CSA) which need to be addressed. The principal issues facing our affiliates are: • Lack of equipment, funding and financial sustainability • Lack of facilities • Lack of skills and capacity • Geographical spread To quote Aristotle : “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” Over the next five years and beyond, Boland Cricket is committed to a journey of developing and sustaining a quality service and excellence. Not just at senior provincial, and eventually franchise level, but on all levels of the game, especially within the schools, clubs, regions and the communities it serves. We are seeking those who share our vision and who has a desire to become part of our journey and to share in our success. Currently Boland’s main source of funding is Cricket South Africa. Unfortunately these funds are not sufficient to achieve our development goals and to adequately serve our communities. This in turn restricts the pace and quality at which the affiliated schools and clubs can reach the level of service and excellence they aspire to. Recognizing this shortfall has motivated the clubs, the Boland Board and all members associated with the province to develop and agree on a five year plan with the specific aim of attaining and sustaining this level of service and excellence. In this respect we are seeking sponsors who share our vision and who have a desire to share in our journey and success. Sponsorship will provide immediate assistance with the following: • Provide equipment to the Regions; • The implementation of capacity building programs i.e. 1. Umpire courses 2. Scorers courses 3. Coaching programs 4. Administration courses 5. Player development Subaru Cape Towns Dealer Principal Tienie Bester hands over the keys of a brand new Subaru Legacy to Boland Cricket CEO Omar Henry.
