To this day he claims it was the opposition number eight who did the damage by ruthlessly stamping on him. The rest of us concluded that he probably cut it on a comb. Whatever the truth, the result was blood everywhere and an urgent need for stitches. But without a doctor being present, some characteristic Japanese innovation was called for. The delicate operation was therefore performed by the father of one of the home team. Who happened to be a vet. On the field, Mike protected his gaping wound in the remaining tour games by donning a scrum cap. Off the field, he covered it up with a classic Japanese rising sun headband, thereby becoming Portstewarts very first Ninja. There have been several others since, normally seen outside The Anchor in the early hours.
