MEMORIAL DAY FOR HRANT DINK AND CONDEMN VIOLENCE AGAINST JOURNALISTS This is an open invitation to gather in order to commemorate Hrant Dink, a Turkish journalist of Armenian heritage, who was killed on January 19th, 2007. As a group of Vancouverites from Turkey, we are going to gather this Wednesday, January 22nd at 6:30 pm in front of the Art Gallery. Hrant Dink’s name has become a symbol of human rights and freedom of expression in Turkey. By commemorating Dink’s death, we are not only questioning and protesting a verdict against his murderers, but we are condemning the authoritarian and violent attitude of the present government against journalists and protesters in general. Hrant Dink always professed his love for his country. He was an outspoken critic of government policies against freedom of expression. He spoke and wrote about the democratization of Turkey and defended other writers and journalists under prosecution. He also wrote and spoke about prejudices and injustices that came from Turkish and Armenian communities and raised issues and problems about peace and reconciliation. He wrote against hate literature in the media and promoted friendship between Turks and Armenians. He refused to remain silent even after he was threatened. He was pivotal in the discussions of reconciliation with Turkey’s past and its minorities. Ultimately he was a casualty, a martyr, in the fight against bigotry and injustice. Join us in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery this Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in solidarity with Turkey and countless other cities in the world to commemorate Hrant Dink and other Turkish journalists.
