MERCY IN ISLAM. After watching the following video which shows inhuman behaviors towards the young one. I couldn’t hold my pen, I saw it dat its better I contribute towards prohibiting such behaviors. When you see an old woman carrying a very heavy load, staggering with every step she takes, you sympathize with her. If you find a small cat which is blind and is shivering from cold and does not know how to feed itself, you pity it. When you see a lost child weeping, you become very affectionate and tender. The feeling that you had towards all these people is the feeling of mercy. Mercy is one of the Attributes of Allah. It is He Who created us, and it is He Who provides us with food and water and when we are ill, He cures us. Allah also guides us to believe in Him. The Mercy of Allah is all-comprehensive, and its manifestations are endless, because it encompasses everything and reaches every single creature. All of us are in dire need for it. Allah Says (what means): He said: (As to) My Punishment I afflict therewith whom I will and My Mercy embraces all things. That (Mercy) I shall ordain for those who are the Muttaqun (pious), and give Zakat; and those who believe in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs and revelations, etc.)}[Quran 7:156] {Allah, the Almighty, said : And ordain for us good in this world, and in the Hereafter. Certainly we have turned unto You. Allah created mercy in the hearts of His Slaves, and this is why people have mercy for each other. The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said: Allah created mercy in one hundred parts, He retained with Him ninety-nine parts, and sent down one part to the earth. Due to this one part of mercy, there is mutual love among the creation so much so that a horse may lift away its hoof from its young offspring, fearing that it might harm it. [Al-Bhukhaari]. However, a ruthless, cruel person will not attain the Mercy of Allah on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said: Mercy will not be taken away except from a doomed person. [At-Tirmithi] The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, also said: He who does not show mercy to others, will not be treated mercifully. [Al-Bukhaari] The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, further said: If you show mercy to those who are on the earth, He Who is above the heaven (i.e. Allaah) will show mercy to you. [At Tirmithi] To Whom Should We Be Merciful? Mercy is an excellent characteristic to have and we should have it and extend it to all creatures. As we need the Mercy of Allah, we should also be merciful towards each other so that we could attain the Pleasure and Love of Allah. We should be specially merciful and careful towards some people such as: • Aged Parents: Just as they were kind and compassionate towards us when we were young, we should be kind to them when they are old. We should serve them happily, obey them, talk to them in a polite and decent manner, and never utter bad words in their presence. • The weak, the needy, the ill, and people with special needs such as the blind, the dumb and the disabled: We should help them, fulfill their needs, and never mock at their disabilities. Allah Says: (what means): {No blame or sin is there upon the blind, nor is there blame or sin upon the lame, nor is there blame or sin upon the sick (that they go not forth to war). And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, He will admit him to Gardens beneath which rivers flow (Paradise); and whosoever turns back, He will punish him with a painful torment. [Quran 48:17] • Young Children Especially Orphans: We should love and care for them and be gentle and play with them. The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: He who has no mercy towards younger ones, and does not acknowledge the honour of our older ones, is not one of us. [At-Tirmithi] • All Those Who Serve Us: the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, used to eat and talk with his servants. He also used to advise people to take care of them because they are our brothers. We must feed them from the same food we eat, make them wear the same clothes we wear, and never overburden them with things that are beyond their ability. • All Animals and Birds: because they are the creatures of Allah and they have senses, feelings, pain, and illnesses. We should feed them, give them water, and never overburden them. We should not harm or beat them. We must take care of their medical needs if they are sick and provide them with a suitable place in which to live. The Gift of Mercy The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, was the most merciful and tender human beings who ever lived. His mercy covered the young, the old, the weak, the strong, the animals, the birds, and even his enemies. He, sallallaahu alayhi wa saalm, was the greatest mercy sent down by Allaah in order to guide mankind to the path of belief and success in this world as well as in the Hereafter. Allaah Says (what means): {And We have sent you (O Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam,) not but as a mercy for the Aalameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists).}[Quran 21:107]
