MIKE Mulongoti says he has not endorsed the UPND as he is not sure whether the opposition party will deliver for Zambia. Mulongoti was speaking at a briefing in Lusaka yesterday. The meeting was called to clarify media reports that he had endorsed the candidature of UPND president Hakainde Hichilema in the forthcoming presidential election. “We are looking at the bigger interest which is Zambia. If we are going to be emotional about the choice of who to support, then we will be doing things the same old way,” he said. “We want to support a candidate based on their ability to deliver for Zambia. There are so many things involved in being President. Your temperament, your love for the rule of law and justice. So we need to do those interrogations and be satisfied that the person we are supporting is the right person. We don’t care what political party it is but as long as they have capacity to deliver and that they are sincere people, we will support.” On Tuesday, at the invitation of Alliance for Democracy and Development president Charles Milupi, Mulongoti, with All People’s Congress party leader Nasoni Msoni, attended an event at which the former endorsed Hichilema. “As members of the alliance, we could not have gone against our agreement that when the time comes to choose a candidate, we will do it in unison,” said Msoni. And Milupi said Mulongoti and Msoni had not made any statements suggesting that they were endorsing Hichilema. Mulongoti on Tuesday said he will not throw away his principles like other opposition leaders to support the UPND in the January 2015 presidential election. But other media institutions reported that Mulongoti had endorsed Hichilema in the forthcoming election. Related Stories
