MIND BLOWN:: IMAGE #1 is the map we all grew up with. The Mercator projection -- a cylindrical map projection presented by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. It became the standard map projection for nautical purposes because of its ability to represent lines of constant course as straight segments which conserve the angles with the meridians. the Mercator projection distorts the size and shape of large objects, as the scale increases from the Equator to the poles, where it becomes infinite. ::: IMAGE #2 is the Gall-Peters projection -- is one specialization of a configurable equal-area map projection known as the equal-area cylindric or cylindrical equal-area projection. IN OTHER WORDS, IMAGE #2 reflects the true size of each land mass.
