The two party political system is like so many other detrimental systems that we have to navigate in modern life. Most of these systems were conceived with the best intentions and have become distorted beyond the point of recognition for any number of reasons. We often highlight those that are actively working to manipulate these systems and point to a handful of bad actors as proof that they are subject to the whims of the powerful and are thus in need of replacement. But the truth is more fundamentally basic, and thankfully so. These systems operate with the same mechanisms as everything else and analyzing them from a perspective of quantitative mathematics not only highlights the inevitability of an inequitable outcome, but also offers indicators of what a replacement system might look like.
