Thursday 4/9: We left Esperance on Thursday and drove 440k. First stop was along the road to stock up on firewood, then Norseman for morning tea and fuelled up for the beginning of our long drive. Surprisingly the first stretch of 220k on the Nullarbor was not as I expected, there were lots of trees and pretty wildflowers along the roadside. Only about 100k into the journey Leonie & Gregs car had a warning light - shades of déjàvue for us from our last trip. After the boys checked it out it was decided to push on as it didnt appear to be serious, fingers crossed. First night we stopped at Woorlba Homestead free camp near Balladonia, 240k east of Norseman. Had a nice fire with wood collected earlier in the day and enjoyed our slow cooked chicken dinner. No phone, TV or internet service and once again no luck with the bloody satellite setup...ggggrrrrrr. Extra blankets needed for the night, it was freezing. Friday 5/9: Day 2 of our trek was a cool sunny morning as we headed off on the longest straight stretch of road in Australia, 146k without a bend. Trees remained for about 50k, then the landscape changed to scrub, then back to trees again. Next we had to mountainous ranges to the left of us that stayed with us all afternoon. Sections of The Eyre Hwy are used by the RFDS for emergency landings with airstrips marked on the road and warning signs to alert travellers. Called in to look at the blowhole at Caiguna, good for a laugh, but not much of a tourist attraction. Its just a dry hole in a rock, apparently with caves beneath the surface. Stopped for morning tea, passed through our first time change of 45 minutes, headed to Madura Pass for lunch, then settled in at Jilah Rockhole free camp for the night. Another nice fire. About 400k today. Looks like another cold night ahead. Pictures of the changing landscape of the Nullarbour between Norseman and Mundrabilla.
