#MLKDay As the nation continues to engage in difficult conversations about modern era race relations, law enforcement, and violence, the theme of this years Black Heritage Month programming series is Black Bodies, Black Lives. Jerry W. Mitchell will deliver the keynote lecture in the Kirby Hall of Civil Rights. An investigative reporter with the Jackson, Miss. Clarion-Ledger, Mitchells courageous efforts led to the prosecution of unpunished murders from the Civil Rights era. In 1989, Mitchell undertook a meticulous review of the 1963 assassination of NAACP leader Medgar Evers. Mitchell laid the groundwork for a new trial for K.K.K. member Byron de la Beckwith, culminating in the conviction and life sentence of Beckwith in 1994. He was portrayed in the 1996 Rob Reiner film Ghosts of Mississippi about his investigation into the murder Evers. Details: calendar.lafayette.edu/node/13179
