MOBILE PHONE CAN ALLEVIATE POVERTY, ENSURE FOOD SECURITY AND BOOST RURAL ECONOMY What can we do with the wider coverage of mobile phone technology like Digicel? We have a country so rugged, so spread across different geography and sectors of community. There are about 70-80% of the population live in the rural communities. That means, poverty, rural economy, market access, government services and up-to-date information is a challenge. What can PNG do with mobile phone technology to mazimise rural impact positively? Countries similar to PNG with bigger rural population are exploring the opporrunities of mobile phone technology. There are subsidising mobile access for the populace to address concerns in food security, poverty and market. According to Máximo Torero, Division Director, Markets, Trade and Institutions, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI): If we invest in increasing access to these technologies – making sure everyone can connect – and in ensuring the content they can access is informative and relevant to their needs – we can provide the rural poor with the tools they need to escape poverty We can find inovative insight to help our people.
