MONDAY MUSINGS BY WANGECHI KURIA TECHNOLOGY PANORAMA: FAST FORWARD IT’S 2050 What do you think will be the in thing when it comes to technology in 30 years time? This question was posed while I was at a sleepover at a friend’s home .Her mum, in bid to explain the importance of seizing the moment of being young and doing the right thing at the right time; belabored with props of radio cassettes, tracing back to the tiny rectangular records which to move from one song to another you had to remove the cassette from the radio put your finger in one of the holes and swirl it the number of times you estimate the cassette needs to play. She traced the evolution of that vintage technology up to where we are now. That is how time the greatest resource any human being has in equal measure flutters .Right at the epicenter life: our youth , we get wrapped up by the moment ,we dance to the tune of every rhythm choked up by procrastination ,abort our dreams and visions , chose to wade in the murky waters of mob psychology and before we know it, we are submerged deep in the funky mire of I wish I knew .We soon get ousted and we become onlookers if we are lucky not to have been swallowed by the wrong choices that we made .Just like the obsolete cassettes which can’t function anymore yet at one time they were the real deal. When I got home I did my homework. I tried to engage my imagination and creative expressions seasoned by some research .I think these inventions will be very cool. 1. The smart watch –the days of using your wrist watch to tell time will be over .We will use our watches to surf the web, send emails and text messages, check twitter and Face book and a whole lot more. 2.Mind reading headphones –imagine how cool it would be to have headphones that have sensor that detects your mood and select your playlist according to your feelings .It sounds farfetched right ?Well this technology (Mico headphones )was presented by Japan at the music trade show, South by South West (SXSW)in Austin Texas early last year. 3. The synthetic brain –the virtual brain will be an exceptional tool that will give neurologists a new understanding of the mammalian brains .They will be able to use the synthetic brains to understand how sensory information from the real world is interpreted and stored. The blue print project is already underway in Switzerland under EFPL (Ecole Polytechnic Federale de Lausanne) 4. Recorded feelings –how would it feel to be able to relieve your happy moments with the push of a button ?How would you feel to revive the feeling of when you had fallen in love ?Just as you play a favorite song to make you feel better ,recorded feelings will enable you revive your best moments .A new British application known as Xpression has already been launched to allow users to track their moods by recording their phone calls and translating them to what they feel .This technology is still years away from recording body ,mind and heart feelings and reviving them later .
