MORE ABOUT THE ANIMALS WE PLAN TO COLLAR WITH YOUR HELP...... The Shangaans are the local people found in the area that we work in. They take their name from the Zulu warrior Soshangane. Soshangane at his zenith established a large empire known as Gaza in the early 1800s which encompassed parts of Zimbabwe and the Gaza province in Mozambique. Soshangane imposed King Shakas military system of dominion and taught the people the Zulu ways of fighting, and made them wear skins and ostrich feathers on their heads. He did not change the style of architecture, the round huts with their patterned thatch roofs, because they were beautiful. We are pleased to have a study animal carrying the name of a proud warrior and who still roams across the ancient haunts of his former namesake. We first collared Soshangane in October 2005 after encountering him earlier in February of the same year. We are delighted to have watched him come into musth and slowly mature into beautiful bull that he is today. Enjoy these glimpses of him dusting, splashing and simply coming into his own!
