MORPETH remembers the beginning of World War One this weekend. The conflict, which claimed the lives of more than 16m people across the globe, lasted from 1914-1918, and had an immeasurable impact on the world we know today. A flower festival and exhibition is being held at the Church of St James the Great, Copper Chare, from Saturday, August 2, until Monday, August 4, from 10am-6pm, excluding service times. There will be a civic service at 10am on Sunday and an hour-long vigil service from 10pm on Monday, the anniversary of the war beginning. The occasion is being marked in other places too. There will be a commemoration service at St Andrews Church, Bothal, at 3pm on Sunday, and a service at St Georges URC Church, Morpeth, on Monday at 6pm. Residents at Netherwitton are holding a commemoration event as part of their village fete at Netherwitton Hall on Sunday from Noon until 6pm.
