MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY By Miriam Mukasa “Its your ATTITUDE, not your APTITUDE, that determines your ALTITUDE. Many people wrongly assume that top grades or talent (Aptitude) will guarantee them success i.e. Altitude (Elevation/progress). However, to think so is not only naive but will lead you down the wrong path. Take this example: If you are a graduate or have completed university, this in itself means that on paper, you are more qualified than Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, or the late Steve Jobs, all of whom did not graduate from university. But does this mean you will match or exceed their success? Most probably not. Aptitude (skills, talent) alone is not enough. All three aforementioned CEOs are/were bright of course, but so are many graduates, many of whom will not achieve any form of success. The main ingredient that brings success is ATTITUDE not Aptitude. I see many candidates who think that with their top grades they can walk in to any job and have this same arrogant attitude when interviewed only to come out shell shocked after they are rejected time and time again. You also have other people who spend precious time and money collecting certificate after certificate and when they job hunt or start a business and go three months with no success, they go back to school for more certificates - fear of facing reality. In actual fact, what they should both be focusing on, is their attitude; are they going in to interviews or client meetings feeling too arrogant or already feeling dejected and expecting a rejection? If so, both attitudes need to change. The fact is, ATTITUDE (mind-set) is everything for it determines how you react to events - those you can control as well as those you cannot. If you have failed and not achieved the grades or promotion you expected then allow yourself one day to feel sorry for yourself but after the 24 hours are up, you need to get back to applying for jobs or organise customer meetings. A positive mental attitude will enable you to recover from failure, a negative one will see you wallowing in self pity long after the failure expiry date. So remember, ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING. Wishing you all, a good week! Look out for details on our Careers Fair which is due to held on Friday, 6 March 2015!
