MUM CONFESSION As we did their homework, I found myself looking at the clock waiting anxiously for their bed time. I had rushed them to finish their dinner so we could start their homework. Now repeat 2x1 =2 2 x 2 =4...... 2 x3 ..erm,.erm... David can you hurry up please you know you have to go to bed soon I snapped at my little boy who was struggling to remember the answer. I looked at the time again its almost bed time and he has not recited his 3 times table yet. God knows how many times I looked at that clock and shouted at him to hurry up. As parents we are super busy. I am sure many of you can relate, not enough time in the day to do all we have to do. My day would usually start with Hurry up or my friend I dont have time for nonsense. Hurry up we’re going late Hurry up and eat your breakfast, Hurry up and get dressed then at night again it is Hurry up and do your homework hurry up and go to bed. The poor boy by now will think his middle name is hurry up and am sure by now, you sef are tired of all the hurry up I typed in the last paragraph. One of the challenges I have is getting my boys out the door in one peace and on time. They are so caught up in their own little world that they do not hurry up. When I want to do a quick breakfast one will want to help crack the egg and stir ever so gently or he is interested in counting down to 0 with the microwave when all I want is to warm the food for 30secs. When I have 5 minutes left to leave the house, one will stop to put his special pen in his bag carefully, and the other wants to have one last look at the mirror to boost his confidence and maybe even stop to pet the neighbours dog *rolling my eyes in annoyance*. I have been rushing my kids so much and trying to keep to schedule that I feel Im making them miss all those memorable moments that are so interesting to them. The careful admiration of the flowers, the careful scrutiny of the stones, the stopping to say good morning to the neighbour who is also trying to rush off - infact all the little things that make them learn and understand the world around them. Im working really hard to remind myself that the laundry can wait, cornflakes for dinner is ok and if there are toys everywhere, who cares! It so much more important to enjoy them while they are young! And although the words “hurry up” never increased their speed to do anything EVER, I said them anyway. Maybe even more than the words, “I love you.” hmmmm................ Now I try to find a balance and know when to let go and enjoy the moments with them. I remind myself that I will only be late to my destination for just a few years while they are young. So my dear friends, the next time I come late to your party or you see me late in church just bear with me because I am helping my children to improve their attention to detail skills. Thank you
