Prior to the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011, and the nuclear - TopicsExpress

Prior to the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011, and the nuclear disasters that resulted from it, Japan generated 30% of its electric power from nuclear reactors. Currently, for the sake of the country’s safety all nuclear plants have been shut down, leaving Japan completely without nuclear-produced electrical power! Shouldn’t we be surprised that the lights are still on, the trains are still running, the factories are still producing and the neon signs in cities like Tokyo and Osaka are still displaying all those advertisements? It seems we even don’t need to reduce our power consumption by 30% to get rid of nuclear power! But so far the Japanese Government and the electric power companies have succeeded in making the citizens believe that nuclear reactors are absolutely required to produce the power needed for our daily living.
