MUNFORD, TN—Collierville ventured out of district Friday, returning home with a 36-13 victory and, more importantly, a spot in the driver’s seat for the District 15 crown. Collierville (7-1, 4-0) won its sixth straight, winning comfortable over the Cougars (1-7) on the arm of Alex Hicks and the foot of Corbin Peeper. Meanwhile, Houston lost its second game of the week, dropping a 38-14 decision to Ridgeway, leaving the Dragons alone atop District 15. Hicks passed for 323 yards and four touchdowns while Peeper connected on field goals of 44, 40 and 38 yards. The Dragons defense limited Munford to 229 total yards, holding the Cougars to 83 in the first half as it built a 20-0 lead. Collierville opened the scoring on Peeper’s 44-yard field goal that split the uprights and with enough distance from 50-plus. The senior placekicker’s effort was set-up on a 40-yard hook-up from Hicks to Drew Van De Vuurst on a key third-down conversion. On the next series, the junior quarterback found Drew Bethea on another third-and-long conversion, finding the senior for 31 yards on a seam route. Four plays later, Hicks then hit Caleb Williams on a picture-perfect post from 38 yards out, making it 10-0 with two minutes left in the first quarter. Munford mounted its only serious threat of the first half, marching to midfield before penalties and a 7-yard sack by Jonquall Carrothers quieted the Cougars’ drive. Hicks did not wait until third down on the next drive, hitting Reiss Jenkins for a 37-yard gain on second-and 19 following a sack. Following two yards on two carries by Edmond Pomphrett, Hicks converted another third with a nine-yarder to Bethea before finding Van De Vuurst on a corner route from 15 yards out. With the rushing attack bottled up, Hicks opted for Bethea on first down the next series with similar results – another first down after a 32-yard gain. But three straight incompletions brought Peeper out for another try and the senior was money once more, connecting from 40-yards out for the 20-0 lead. Munford opened the second half with an outburst. The Cougars finally got a kick to return and made it worthwhile with a 39-yard return to the 41, its best field position of the game. A straight dive up the gut went for 59 yards untouched and 21 seconds in to the second half, Munford cut the lead to 20-7. Collierville responded with a 44-yard drive, keyed by third-down conversions to Bethea and Jenkins. Peeper capped it with a 38-yard field goal. Isaiah Downey then quelled a Cougar drive with an interception, returning it 68 yards for an apparent pick six. A holding penalty negated the score, but Hicks quickly got the six back with a 44-yard toss to Van De Vuurst on the next play. The teams then played giveaway with Downey intercepting another Cougar aerial. Collierville lost a fumble and Hicks was picked off with the return setting Munford up at the Dragon 5 for its next score. Collierville closed the scoring with Hicks targeting Van De Vuurst on an out pattern the junior speedster turned into a 23-yard score for the final margin. OFFENSIVE NOTABLES: Pomphrett led the Dragon rushing attack with 29 yards on 12 carries on a night when sack yardage left the Dragons with only 29 yards rushing on 28 attempts. Bethea and Jenkins each came up big in their first starts; Bethea caught four balls for 94 yards and Jenkins added 51 yards on three catches.
