He has studied the Qur’anic sciences for close to ten years in Egypt. In this early morning session he will recite various portions of the Qur’an as a means of motivating women to embark on the journey towards studying the Qur’an and its meanings. His recitation is truly inspirational and is sure to move hearts. He will also share a short bit of advice. 10.30am INDIVIDUAL ADDRESS Speaker: Shanaaz Jeebhai Topic: Befriending the Qur’an – How and Why? Description: In this session the speaker, who is heavily involved in studying and teaching the Qur’an as well as the Arabic language, will share her perspectives on how to connect/re-connect with the Book of Allah. INCLUDES A QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION 11.15am PANEL DISCUSSION Topic: Creative writing as a means of educating the community about burning issues Speakers: Karen Tahirah Jayes and Shafinaaz Hassim Facilitator: to be confirmed Breakdown: 11.15am Facilitator’s Introduction 11.20am Why I wrote For the Mercy of Water - Karen Tahirah Jayes 12.00pm Why I wrote Sophia - Shafinaaz Hassim Description: Both speakers will talk about why they chose to write about specific topics close to their hearts through the medium of fiction. 12.40pm Discussion with the facilitator and audience about creative writing, and how these writers have managed to break into a highly competitive market, inspirations for their ideas, the writing process and various other issues related to both the book itself, as well as the themes they highlight for e.g. SoPhia deals with domestic violence and For the Mercy of Water deals with capitalistic societies. . 1.30pm Lunch and Dhuhr Salaah 2.15pm INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION Speaker: Kassa Zainab Barakamfitye Topic: A Refugee’s Story Description: In this session 22 year old Kassa who hails from Burundi will simply tell her story: how and why she came to South Africa as a child, what’s motivated her to excel at her studies at university, her dreams for her country of birth and her future, and her perspectives on the South African Muslim community. INCLUDES A QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION 3.00pm INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION Speaker: Quraysha Ismail Sooliman Topic: Fostering a Spirit of Sisterhood in our midst Description: The speaker will enlighten delegates about the foundations of sisterhood in Islamic history and how to implement them in our country, where Muslims hail from different ideological, racial and cultural backgrounds, and such diversity often seperates rather than unites. The speaker will also touch on reaching out to women from other religious groups in an effort to work together in fighting common issues like substance abuse, racism, etc. INCLUDES A QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION 4.00PM INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION Speaker: Mrs Zuleikha Mayat Topic: Advices to contemporary Muslim women Description: In this closing address, the esteemed speaker will draw on her decades of experience to share some insight, wisdom and advice to delegates on how to carve a meaningful space for themselves in society.
