MUSON Festival Opens With My Kind of Music..... The 2013 MUSON Festival kicked off on a high note last Thursday evening with its ‘My Kind of Music’ event. It was an evening with outstanding personalities sharing their favourite music with the audience in a reminiscing manner. The event was well attended by music gurus and elites of the society whose presence made an impeccable statement on the reputation of the Music Society of Nigeria since its 30 years of existence. On the spotlight were Mrs Femi Akinkugbe who chairs the artistes and programme committee of MUSON, Dr. Patrick Dele Cole, former Nigeria’s Ambassador to Brazil, Ms Evelyn Oputu, Managing Director Bank of Industry, and Stefano De Leo, Consul General of Italy to Lagos. The acting chairman of MUSON, Mr. Kitoyi Ibari-Akinsan moderated the event as the panelists engaged guests for almost two hours, spinning their most favourite songs in all genres, from classicals to jazz, reggae and afro pop. Delightfully, they shared memories of what attracted them to the songs with the audience, evoking a melange of feelings from the audience. Mrs Akinkugbe’s choice of music were mostly fond memories as a young woman in love, showing youthful exuberance. A typical example she gave was her husband’s favourite song to her back then Barry White’s ‘l Love You Just the Way You Are’. “I hung on to every word he said on that song’ she told the audience dramatically which elicited laughter. Her list of favourite songs also included the popular twist song by Hank Ballard. For Dr Cole, his plethora of music was a variety of sorts and explored themes from anti-war songs to sensational hit of PSquare ‘Chop My Money’ which got the audience dancing to the beat. It was an unexpected spin from the Ambassador. While choosing ‘Blowing in the Wind’ as his anti-war song, he spoke about the ongoing crisis in the northern region of Nigeria, stating that the terrorist group cannot say Islam is against education because it was the...
