MY BIRTHDAY - BEHIND THE VEIL Another year, another opportunity - TopicsExpress

MY BIRTHDAY - BEHIND THE VEIL Another year, another opportunity for retrospection, introspection and projection. Firstly, I am gradually inching closer to my eternal abode as I pile on my earthly years. Just recently, I have witnessed, heard and read tributes to two popular people, the difference, only their days on earth; Nelson Mandela and Komla Dumor. This has strongly re-affirmed my belief that, what matters most is the life in our years rather than the years in our life. Today’s eulogy has been prompted by a statement during a sermon by Dr. Philip Aryee (A fellow Geologist at Legon) last night, “THERE ARE MANY OUT THERE WHOSE FUTURE AND PROSPERITY DEPEND ON YOU SO MUCH THAT, YOU CANNOT UNILATERALLY CHOOSE TO FAIL IN YOUR MANDATE”. I went to bed pondering over this, WHY AM I ALIVE TILL NOW?? Coming from a village that can only be referenced to Mankessim, I was involved in a fatal accident in the sixth month. As a baby could cry to a point that there were thoughts of throwing me out through the window. At year two, mounted my dad’s motor bike, flipped it over myself breaking both my leg and hand. At year six, I had to join the class of ‘step sons and daughters’. At seven, I had to temporally sit in a classroom with a group of kids that had to tie cloth around their neck to school and walk barefooted. It was here I tasted my first of three close shave with death by CHOLERA, to be carried at back of a Good Samaritans for a walking distance of seventeen kilometres on foot whiles unconscious to the road side before by road to Saltpond Hospital. At night I saw death, but a ‘supernatural being’ came to my bed, removed my drips and carried me away from the ward. The following morning, my mother had to bear the blunt of the nurses and the doctors for my ‘misbehiour’ of abandoning my sick bed. At 8, my eyes felt like fallen out from their sockets, the resultant effect I had to bear till after my O’ Levels. At 9, I had an encounter with a 6 foot snake on a fishing expedition, coming as close as one metre but gosh! this orange coloured venom headed creature turned back on its own volition whiles I stared at it (Maybe I did not look palatable). The irony was that, my senior cousin was shouting on me prior to seeing the snake and threatening to drown me if I lose even a single fish out of his catch. However, after seeing the snake from about ten metres, he collapsed into the river (laughing at hindsight). Shingles, measles, sickle cell etc. had all made a cross road with me one way or the other, but Alas, it has all been victory unto victory Contrasting all these challenges, there has been amazing people that I call ‘angels’ who have always been there to fill in the gap. These angels are reserved for mention at the appropriate time I am privileged that my schooling had been with Philip Quarcoe Boys, Mfantsipim and Legon, all Premiers in Ghana in their respective categories bringing me into contact and in association with cream of diverse acumen of characters and environment that has forged and shaping my purpose of life. My progress in the professional arena can only be summed up in one statement…..STILL UNFOLDING!!! The above, digressional though it may seem, was intended to elevate the thought that, wherever we are coming from is not as important as where we are determined to get to. Likewise, I am more determined make myself relevant to my wife, children, parents, siblings, family, loved ones, well-wishers, pastors, advisors, friends, colleagues, work, superiors, peers, subordinates, mentors, mentored, critics and the generation unborn. To you my dear one: • No matter how you see yourself, your actions and inaction will one day determine the course of you, your world and the world. • Quiters don’t win and Winners don’t quit • Will power, determination, quest of knowledge and attitude can take you wherever you want to get • Trials in my life has made it possible to taste Triumph • Tests have enriched my Testimony • Wars in life had given me the personal meaning of a Warrior • Skill and talent when well-developed will always make a way for you • Don’t burn bridges no matter what, you will be humbled whom you will need in your day of need Sitting by my bedside and typing, I can only say, thank you God for bringing me this far. Thanks to all of you who have made a difference in my life and to those who are looking up to me….MAY GOD HELP ME NOT TO FAIL YOU IN MY PROCEEDING YEARS. I know whom I have believed in and trust that, He will definitely bring me to my expected end!! Cheers to us all
