MY MEMOIRS.. THE SPIRITUAL AWAKENINGS IN THE WESTERN SAHARA DESERT.. Morocco 2002.. My 50th country.. From Marrakesh I did a three day trip to the Western Sahara Desert, the 1st day our mini group travelled through the High Atlas Mountains and visited a classic mud built Kasbah, the buildings in Marrakesh were rose coloured as were all those on the way to the desert.. We arrived at the Dades gorge which had red cliffs and rock formations, spectacularly stunning, we walked through the Gorge gingerly stepping over sharp stones and scorpions, well worth the effort to climb up to a high point for the wonderful view.. Having rested overnight near the Dades Gorge we continued on past the Todra Gorge to Merzouga on the edge of the Western Sahara Desert.. The landscape was stark and barren here, unbearably hot and windy, too, impossible to even imagine anyone living there but people do live there.. From Merzouga we rode on camels for hours into the desert where we stayed overnight sleeping out in the open under the stars, we were in the middle of nowhere surrounded by sand dunes, far, far away from civilisation.. sleeping under the stars was an extraordinary experience for me, I felt a stronger spatial awareness than before and realised how small in reality we humans are in the big picture, the infinite beauty of the universe, the sky above and more kept me up all night, it was just so humbling yet strengthening to know that I belong in a little way to the magnificent greatness and power of existence.. I felt spiritually enlightened, even healed and unburdened out there.. The next morning we rode on our camels again back to Merzouga and then in our transport back to Marrakesh.. Completing my Marrakesh stay was that exciting evening at The Main Square with food stalls and entertainment that delighted the crowds with tasty treats of all kinds, musicians, dancers, acrobats, jugglers, fortune tellers, snake charmers, monkey trainers, lunatics, etc, thrillingly awesome was this mad mass of humanity.. Soon it was time to go and I was on my way via Casablanca and Frankfort to Vancouver, Canada, without a clue as to what awaited me there, ah, the quirkiness of life, a twist here, a loop there and hey presto, a change of scene.. Cheers..
