MY going away was leaving the US when I was still 17 on a trip - TopicsExpress

MY going away was leaving the US when I was still 17 on a trip around the world with a backpack, sleeping bag, student and military dependent ID, a Youth Hostel card and $2500 (which my dad gave me DESPITE the fact that Id forged his signature and drained the $3000 savings account I had from a car accident insurance settlement from when I was 13). When I came home safe after 5 months, he almost broke my ribs with his hug while crying. This veteran of the Merchant Marines, Navy, and Marine Corps (24 years total and all before I started Junior High in everywhere from pre Mao China [where he saw an actual beheading], to Korea during the ACTIVE conflict, to Post Occupation Japan both before and after my birth). He said (paraphrasing) I wasnt sure youd make it back, but I KNEW you had to do it. You ARE a survivor. My heart almost burst with pride hearing that praise
