Macbeth - Hamilton Production - Meteor Theatre - Brief Review I dont actually enjoy Shakespeare, as a general rule, I find it a bit like watching cop dramas in pig-latin, simultaneously incomprehensible and florid. So if I say I enjoyed this particular version of one play, its not because I owe any favours, and friends know me well enough to know I dont give out meaningless positivity lightly. So, the recent production of Macbeth by Ross Mcleod & Co is good, and ably performed. Not to damn with faint praise, I should state that in particular the lead performances are well and compelling, even if my terse, ambiguous brain could not always pluck the details from the bow of the bard. I get the general gist. I suspect that most theatre-goers, despite decades of experience in Shakespeares works, probably felt similarly good about the whole thing. A good touch was the fight scenes. The choreography was impactful, and as the forefront of the play is anger and grief, translating those emotions into action took skill and delicacy so as not to wound anyone while maintaining that impact. At times I was very moved. The snow was a nice touch, also. Who wouldve thought that snow would be so well imitated by polystyrene? But I digress. Should you go and see it? Yes. As far as minor criticisms go, the impact of the side curtains when combined with some of the minor players, who, lacking as much experience, did not project as well as they could, resulted in many a sentence being lost to some sound absorption. Also the range of accents on display wasnt consistent, and lent a slightly surreal quality at times. Finally, a little more colour on the set wouldve been swell - a little decoration here and there mightve elevated the emotional range of the visual aspect of the play, which felt tonally narrow. But those minor things aside, it was well worth the $15 I paid, and for me, being the shakespeare non-admirant I am, that is certainly something. And if you are an admirant, I suspect you would find it more compelling again. themeteor.co.nz/event/macbeth/ 3 more performances remain.
