Maggot debridement therapy is the medical use of specially selected and tested disinfected green blow fly larvae for leaning non-healing wounds. Is a non-traumatic, minimally invasive method to remove necrotic tissue from an extensive foot infection. Removal of necrotic tissue and bacteria is imperative for the most optimal outcome. In the 1940s, before the introduction of antibiotics, maggots were routinely used to clean infected wounds. In 2003 medical maggots (disinfected Phaenecia sericata larvae) were approved by the FDA for Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT). Four principle actions are; 1. Debride (clean) wounds by dissolving the dead (necrotic), infected tissue. 2. Disinfect the wound, by killing bacteria. 3. Stimulate wound healing. 4. Break down and inhibit the formation of biofilm.
