Mahadeo Shivraj’s …Forgotten promises …fifth movie for premiere July at NCC (By Mondale Smith in NYC) The name Mahadeo Shivraj is synonymous with Guyanese flavored movies the likes of Till I Find A Place, A Jasmine For A Gardener, Brown Sugar Too Bitter For Me and 83 Million Gees. But in the scheme of things this Guyanese who has lived in the United States for more than Twenty years by no means has forgotten his roots. In fact he is currently editing yet another movie, his fifth, in pursuit of his dreams to make Guyana a possible Caribbean movie Mecca. The movie titled Forgotten Promise is his fifth one but it’s the first one filmed in Guyana and New York. Due for premier on July 26/27 at the national cultural center, Guyana it is a tale woven by pathos, comedy and humanity. Speaking from the editing suite in Queens New York Shivraj Synopsis of Forgotten Promise is this: Somnauth Narine’s “Forgotten Promise” is a story of redemption. The Americanized Tony Dass, (Mahadeo Shivraj), finds himself in the doldrums. His wife has put him out of his marital home and he is being estranged from his son. While trying to come to grips with this new reality, he receives an intriguing call from an antique dealer in Guyana that prompts his return. After an absence of over twenty years, Tony undertakes this journey home to see if something in his past is responsible for the misery he faces in America. What Tony discovers about himself not only shocks him but reveals the human spirit at its finest. That project aside he just acted in an episode of THE AMERICANS which aired on FX Channel. However, Shivraj is caught between a rock and a hard place as regards to the movie industry or lack there of in his home land, Guyana. With down cast eyes that watered he confides: When I started in Guyana with my first film I was very hyped about creating a film industry there but after five films I am about to close shop because nothing has changed. Void of any political bone or fiber in his being or efforts he further stated, The Government has not put anything in place to curb piracy and there are no cinemas to showcase my movies. Additionally cost is another factor working against his efforts. I have not recuperated the costs for any of my movies I’ve made or invested in. SO, you can say that it is the love for it that keeps me going but I cant really continue in this manner.
