Akh Israel has shown no mercy in Gaza World powers need to impose sanctions on Israel to force it to stop its complete disregard for human life Israeli air strikes are continuing mercilessly in Gaza, with the dead and wounded mounting as the humanitarian catastrophe increases every day due to the Israeli bombardments. Tens of thousands of survivors have had to flee their homes and find shelter wherever they can as Israeli bombs fall all around them. More than 2,100 Palestinians have been killed in the ongoing violence, most of them civilians and many of them women and children. This contrasts with Israeli casualties of 64 soldiers and three civilians. Netanyahu is shameless about his desire to rain down death on Gaza regardless of who is at the end of Israel’s missiles as Israeli forces unleash destruction on whole blocks of flats or people’s homes, factories, hospitals, mosques and schools. And all this is going on as efforts to find a ceasefire and start talks to find a permanent truce are under way in Cairo with the active support of the Egyptian government, which has urged both Hamas and Israel to resume indirect talks and agree to an open-ended ceasefire. A more permanent truce will require Israel to agree to an end to the blockade that has been enforced on Gaza, and has been grossly misused to cripple its economy. The blockade is supposed to restrict the import of any military equipment, but has become a free for all under which the Israelis can torment the Gazans by allowing some imports and disallowing others at their whim. The route ahead is for the violence to stop, and for Israel to recognise that Gaza needs to operate as a normal place with economic needs like anywhere else. It needs open roads and ports so that it can trade and sustain itself. Israel’s refusal to go along with this is not just yet another example of Israeli arrogance but it is also reinforcing the radicals in Gazan politics and giving them every opportunity to lead public opinion. To this end, the international community needs to unite to hold Israel responsible for its crimes and impose sanctions on Israel to force it to end its behaviour as a rogue state with no regard for human life or international law.
